Wochenschrift für das Deutschtum Litauens
Deutsche Nachrichten für Litauen
Deutsche Nachrichten für Litauen (German News for Lithuania) was a newspaper that began publishing in Kauen in 1931, to bring news items to the German minority in Lithuania. The paper was supported by the Kulturverband der Deutschen Litauens (Cultural Association of the German Lithuanians) which itself received support from the German government. The newspaper contains a variety of articles from local to international news, with a focus on German life in Lithuania and news items of note from Germany. Included also are obituaries (usually for individuals who were well-known in Lithuanian-German social circles), business advertisements, and photographs—all of which provide an inside glimpse into the issues and interests of the German community in Lithuania during this time period. The paper ceased publication in 1941 after the relocation of the Germans from Lithuania to the Reich and was also prompted by the disbanding of the Kulturverband by the occupying Soviet regime. The collection is incomplete.
It is important to note that the newspaper, especially during its latter years of publication, was influenced by propaganda coming out of Nazi Germany. The reader should be critical of the articles contained within, especially those which deal with news items and politics that originated in the Reich. The views, opinions, and commentary contained within this publication are presented for research purposes and do not reflect the views or opinions of the IAGL, its board, or it’s supporters.
