Introduction

Genealogists who want to identify their Lithuanian-German ancestors have received an extremely valuable tool with the IAGL index. For the first time, the disparate source material on the history of the rural German settlement in southwestern Lithuania, which ended in 1944/5, is recorded in a single comprehensive index. At the center of this index are the traditional church records and civil status registers of the Evangelical Lutheran communities in Lithuania. Since these records and registries have significant gaps, it is necessary to use other sources that contain usable information. Of particular note  for the first half of the 20th century are the indices of the Deutsches Ausland-Institut and the digitized holdings of the Einwandererzentralstelle (EWZ) of the Third Reich. (See here and here).

Anyone who has used the IAGL index or their own family documents for genealogical research back to the middle of the 19th century is faced with a difficult problem: a gap in the Protestant church records in Lithuania. The purpose of this article is to describe ways in which Lithuanian-German genealogical research can at least partially close the gap.

History

It was not until the 1830s and 1840s that the majority of the Protestant churches in the Suwałki area were founded, and only then did the new Lutheran pastors create their own church records. Until then, baptisms, weddings and deaths of Protestants in the Kingdom of Poland were registered in the Prussian Protestant churches near the border or at nearby Catholic churches, which was probably more common. These Catholic church records from the first half of the 19th century, which still existed in 1940, have largely been destroyed or are missing.

Apart from the older German communities in the cities of Vilnius (Wilna), Kaunas (Kauen) or the Seirijai (Serey) region, most Germans came to the region as colonists (farmers and craftsmen) after the territory west of the Memel River was partitioned to Prussia in 1795 as part of the Third Partition of Poland and became part of the newly founded province of Neuostpreußen (New East Prussia). Nevertheless, settlers with German names can be found decades earlier in the villages near the old Prussian border near Virbalis (Wirballen) or Vištytis (Wischtiten), as the church records from Bilderweitschen or Pillupönen clearly demonstrate.

In 1795, King Friedrich Wilhelm II and, after his death, Friedrich Wilhelm III, invited colonists from Brandenburg, Mecklenburg, Prignitz or even from “abroad” to settle in New East Prussia and South Prussia (Südpreußen). Craftsmen from sought-after professions were promised tax exemptions or mileage allowances for travel.

The vast majority of German settlers, who settled in what is now Lithuanian territory during the short-lived province of New East Prussia (1795-1807) and in the decades afterwards in the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland, came from (Old) East Prussia, often from the counties or parishes near the old Prussian border. Many of them were descendants of  Salzburg exiles, whose surnames are found in large numbers among the Lithuanian Germans (Beyer, Greifenberger, Neubacher, Salecker, Wiemer etc.). They bought farmland or were given deserted farms.

18th century church records in East Prussia also have large gaps depending on the parish and time. Only a few family researchers manage to trace their Lithuanian-German ancestors back to the colonists in Prussian Lithuania in the 1720s and 1730s, who came to the country under King Friedrich Wilhelm I.

In order to connect their families to these ancestral generations, Lithuanian German genealogists have to close the gap from around 1800 to the 1840s. It covers two generations in which, in large parts of this research area, there are no church records or similar with marriage dates or filiations (i.e. records that show the relationship between parents and children).

Other sources must be examined because they contain lists of names, job titles, places of residence, or family relationships.

The IAGL index is already doing pioneering work. For the 1830s and 1840s, files from the parishes of the “Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland” in present-day Lithuania have begun to be evaluated . Occasionally lists of the New East Prussia files were evaluated (military and civic schools 1805/1806). But there are still more records that can be analyzed and perhaps, digitized.

Primary Sources

Military Church Records (Language: German)

When New East Prussia was formed in 1795, the Husaren-Regiment Nr. 5 (Hussar Regiment No. 5) was already in Poland. It was called “v.[on] Suter”, after the new regimental commander, and from 1804 it was changed again to “v.[on]  Prittwitz.” The regimental designations of the Old Prussian Army can be confusing for archivists and researchers. Since the Hussar Husaren-Regiment Nr. 5emerged from the 1. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr. 1 the military church records from New East Prussia are archived under these two names, even if they represent a related collection.

Johann Samuel Müller was hired as a field preacher in June 1796 (See note at the  beginning of baptismal and marriage register 1796). With the change of the regimental commander in 1804, a new field preacher, Christian Friedrich Parthey (See the beginning of the baptismal register 1804), also began his service. Parthey continued the books until the end of Prussian rule in the region in 1807. Both men were married and baptized their own children in the garrison.

The main location of the garrison was Wirballen. Other parts of the Hussar Regiment No. 5 were located in Wischtiten (Vištytis), Wilkowischken (Vilkaviškis), Mariampol (Marijampolė), Kalwaria (Kalvarija), Serey (Seirijai), Prenn (Prienai) and Przerośl. The field preacher traveled from place to place and officiated at church services, baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals.

The military chaplains were primarily responsible for the religious care of the soldiers and their families. Because there were no Protestant churches in New East Prussia, many official acts of the civilian population are also recorded in this regimental church register. The records do not comprehensively represent the Evangelical Lutheran population at this time because the field preacher could not serve everywhere in this extensive area at the same time. However, the German-speaking population of Wirballen and the surrounding villages is quite well documented.

A special feature of this source are the lists of “communicants” kept by the pastor, i.e. those who took part in the Lord’s Supper during the service. Some entire families are listed  with their family relationships to each other (ux[or]=wife, fil[ius]=son, sor[or]=sister, etc.), extremely helpful information for genealogical research.

New East Prussia (Neuostpreußen) Files (Language: German)

Another important but cumbersome source are the files of the General-Ober-Finanz-Kriegs- und Domainen-Direktorium, the central authority for the internal and financial administration of the Prussian state, together with the corresponding holdings of the Privy Council.

The New East Prussia files of the General Directorate were shared following an agreement between East Germany and Poland in 1961. The largest part (around 50 linear meters) is now in the Central Archives of Historical Records (Archiwum Główne Akt Dawnych, AGAD)in Warsaw, the smaller part (almost 20 linear meters) is now kept again in the Secret State Archives Prussian Cultural Heritage (Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz) in Berlin. The larger Warsaw part is almost  completely digitalized and accessible online. The Berlin holdings can be viewed onsite, and the files can be photographed by researchers themselves.

In order to get an overview of the New East Prussia files of the Prussian General Directorate, one must consult finding aids from 1959, which are labelled in the Secret State Archives as Altfindmittel Nr. 194-197. The files (Abteilung 11 Neuostpreußen) are divided into six (sub) departments; the individual archive materials within a department are numbered. These two accounts are also in the digitized holdings of the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw (AGAD), so it is possible to explore the entire holdings in a closed manner and then to read individual archival documents in a targeted manner, whether in the original in the Secret State Archives in Berlin or as a digital copy in the Central Database of Polish Archives .

The IAGL index already includes two groups of sources of interest for family researchers. The files of the newly established German-speaking military and community schools were open to soldiers' children and to the sons and daughters of farmers and craftsmen. The fathers whose occupations are stated made financial contributions, which were kept in records.

The second group of sources are records that were kept about the “settlements” of colonists in the newly created New East Prussia. In particular, the settlement of craftsmen up to 1807 is documented here. The so-called Generalia contain detailed lists of names of the local craftsmen, when and where they settled in New East Prussia, and where they came from. The Spezialia contain the personal correspondence (between the central administration in Berlin and the capital of the Chamber Department of Białystok) about the administrative act of a single “appointment” of a person or a group of colonists. Further information includes tax exemptions, payments, mileage allowances, applications and permits regarding the family circumstances of the settlers.

In addition, the local traditions of the authorities and cities may answer specific research questions about your own family history.

East Prussian Parishes (Language: German)

Particularly for the areas around Wirballen and Wischiten, one should also consult the church records from Bilderweitschen and Pillupönen, East Prussia. especially up to the 1840s, i.e. up to the founding of the Protestant churches in the Suwałki area. The borders were open to churchgoers from Poland-Lithuania.

For decades, the pastors in Bilderweitschen kept extensive lists of people taking part in the Lord's Supper (“communicants”). Although they are difficult to read, they provide a lot of information for genealogists. Many believers, especially from Wirballen and the surrounding area, came to Bilderweitschen to church.

Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland (Language: Polish)

The IAGL index already includes the contributors lists during the founding phase in the 1830s-1840s of the Protestant parishes in the Suwałki area for  Wischtiten and Wirballen. Similar lists were kept for all new communities and are believed to almost completely include the male adult Protestant population of the Lithuanian Suwałki area in the second quarter of the 19th century.

Administrative Records of the Kingdom of Poland (Language: Polish)

Researchers must have a good knowledge of Polish to research the files of the towns of the Kingdom of Poland in the Suwałki Gubernia from 1810 forward. Here, too, are extensive lists of names that represent the population of the places. An evaluation is pending.
